Livestock production is a significant source of methane emissions, exacerbating climate change through the release of greenhouse gases. IFC supports commercial agribusinesses that empower smallholder farmers and contribute to national food security along agricultural value chains. In particular, IFC recently facilitated the integration of biochar into agricultural supply chains across Africa. When incorporated into soil, biochar improves water and nutrient retention, reducing dependence on fertilizers. It is a proven solution for removing CO2 from the atmosphere and improving soil health, resulting in higher crop yields. Unique was commissioned to undertake a detailed bankable feasibility study for a manure to biochar pyrolysis plant in Zambia.
