The livestock sector in Asia-Pacific is worth more than USD 3 billion and provides livelihoods for more than 800 million smallholders in the region. The sector is very vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters but also contributes significantly to methane and nitrous oxide emissions. Improving livestock productivity can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit of livestock product by up to 30%. Yet, there is a lack of knowledge on how proven climate smart livestock (CSL) measures can be applied at scale. Also, there is limited capacity in the region to assess emissions reductions and resilience building impacts from such CSL measures. Unique was contracted to assess the options for developing a CSL program in the region and for capacity building in selected countries using the Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM).
- Assessed the potential for CSL programs to reduce net GHG emissions in selected countries
- Assessed the potential for CSL programs to increase resilience of livestock smallholder farmers
- Developed a concept note for a regional (i.e. Asia-Pacific) CSL program with proven technologies
- Identified innovative climate finance mechanisms to fund the regional CSL program
- Built capacity of RAP & Country Offices for options assessment in selected countries using GLEAM-I
