The Vietnamese Mekong Delta is one of Earth’s most agriculturally productive regions. At the same time, it is highly vulnerable to impacts from climate change and upstream hydropower development. In recent years, increasing occurrence and severity of droughts was observed, often also resulting in increased salinity in agricultural soils. On the other hand, the region is facing increasing risks from flooding caused by extreme precipitation events. Against this background, An Giang Province proposed the development of a water reservoir to cope with potential flooding and reduce impacts from droughts. Through its technical support under the Integrated Coastal Management Program, the GIZ contracted UNIQUE and the engineering firm von Liebermann in order to evaluate the reservoir proposal.
- Evaluation of the initial reservoir proposal.
- Assessment of technical, socio-economic and environmental feasibility.
- Institutional and capacity needs assessment.
- Development of recommendations for adaptation and implementation of the reservoir.
