Forest resources in Tajikistan have been largely depleted with only 3% of the national forest cover remaining. In order to reverse the trend, the Government of Tajikistan is planning to implement a EUR 12.8 million Forestry Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) Support Project (NSP), financed by the NAMA Facility. While Tajikistan has adopted strong legal frameworks, the forest sector is lacking the institutional capacity and financial resources required to implement sustainable forest management. The NSP aims to address the key barriers and create a pathway for transformational change in the forest sector by optimizing the climate change mitigation potential and the economic performance of the sector. The German development bank (KfW) contracted UNIQUE to carry out an in-depth appraisal and prepare a NSP proposal for the NAMA Facility.
- Support establishment of an inter-ministerial cooperation mechanism for the NSP.
- Development of a transformational change concept.
- In-depth appraisal of the financial and technical cooperation components.
- Development of a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) concept.
- Assessment of the NSP feasibility and preparation of NSP proposal for the NAMA Facility.
