The Government of Cameroon has been actively involved in the global effort to reduce deforestation and forest degradation and to promote conservation, sustainable management of forests and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+). The World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Coastal Forest Program contributes to the Government’s efforts by supporting improved natural resource management and biodiversity conservation in forest areas under threat of deforestation. The WWF requested UNIQUE to provide expert advice and assess the technical and institutional feasibility of a REDD+ project in the Southwest coastal forest region. UNIQUE analyzed the feasibility of establishing a REDD+ project in the Bakossi forested landscape, as well as establishing a sub-national jurisdictional REDD+ program in Southwest Cameroon.
- Assessment of drivers and causes of deforestation and forest degradation to propose strategy options.
- Assess feasibility of landscape-level REDD+ projects, including costs and benefits.
- Develop green business models to foster use of natural resources and sustainable income generation.
- Assess institutional feasibility of sub-national jurisdictional program.
- Scope funding potential based from various financial sources.
