In El Salvador, the agroforestry method of growing coffee under trees is making a crucial contribution to the biodiversity of the country. The shade provided by trees is an important habitat for a wide variety of species. However, the conversion of the coffee agroforestry system to other types of land use, such as conventional agriculture, poses a significant threat to biodiversity. An impact investment fund promoting biodiversity commissioned Unique to evaluate the effect of trees on biodiversity in coffee plantations in El Salvador using the eco-acoustic method.

  • Biodiversity monitoring using sound recorders, camera traps and conducting tree inventories
  • Analysis of the recordings using acoustic indices
  • Provision of project-specific recommendations to promote biodiversity
