Agricultural practices are causing over 50% of non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; about 7% result from rice farming. To address this challenge, the SNV program “Transforming Rice Value Chains for Climate Resilient and Sustainable Development” (TRVC) aims to identify novel approaches for reducing GHG emissions and increasing smallholder farmers’ (SHFs) profits in rice cultivation in Vietnam. The project seeks to employ a results-driven financing approach to motivate private businesses operating within the rice value chain (RVC) to expand their investments in advancing sustainable rice cultivation among SHFs (2022-2027). Unique was commissioned by SNV for measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) in the verification process of GHG emission reductions resulting from participating rice enterprises and SHFs.
- Review of MRV baseline, eligibility, and verification protocols for rice emission reductions
- Review of methodology and quantification approach
- Recommendations to ensure interoperability of TRVC with emerging carbon asset development standards
- Recommendations on Vietnam’s reporting of Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement
- Coordination and presentation of learnings and findings
