In order to better deal with climate change, preserve biodiversity and meet the requirements of the EU Natura 2000 framework, Montenegro’s forestry sector needs to close the data gap on basic ecological information. This includes the mapping of forest site conditions and potential natural forest vegetation as well as the compilation of data on rare and endangered forest types. The modern mapping methodologies developed in Western Europe must be adapted to the capacity of the Montenegrin forestry sector which will test these methodologies in several forest management plans in collaboration with the environmental department. UNIQUE was contracted as a research partner and project coordinator, collaborating with the University of Belgrade’s Forest Faculty, the Chair of Vegetation Science at Freiburg University and Soilution Consulting in Germany.

  • Project coordination.
  • Analysis of forest growth and yield information.
  • Support the development of a dynamic site mapping methodology based on new information.
  • Support the development of an integrated vegetation mapping.
  • Integrate nature protection information in a publicly available web-based Forest Ecology GIS.
  • Integrate all ecological databases into the new forest information system.
