The Biosphere Reserve Trifinio covers an area of more than 7,000 km2 in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. It is an important watershed area for the three countries with around 700,000 people living in the area. The reserve’s ecosystem services however are endangered through unsustainable agricultural activities, cattle breeding and frequent fires. The countries have therefore agreed to form a commission (Comisión Trinacional del Plan Trifinio – CTPT) to coordinate activities and projects to conserve the biosphere reserve and to implement measures through national institutions. The German KfW Development Bank has pledged up to 11 million Euros to support the Commission’s work. UNIQUE has been assigned to elaborate a pre-feasibility study for a possible project with the objective to conserve and develop the biosphere reserve.
