Monitoring of Miombo Forests

Kilombero Valley Teak Company (KVTC), Tanzania, would like to continue with the Miombo forest monitoring inside and outside of their concession area. The study aims to demonstrate the impact of plantation management on the Miombo forest within the area compared to outside the concession area. UNIQUE has supported KVTC to develop the Miombo monitoring system in 2003-2004. One task at that time had been comparing forest cover changes within and outside the KVTC concession area and to assess the impact of KVTC activities. For this purpose satellite imagery from 2002 and 2004 had been compared for the concession area (ca. 75,000 ha). KVTC is now interested to conduct a follow-up study of the forest cover change analysis in 2013 to establish additional data points and extent the monitoring system so that it covers the period between 1990 and 2012.
- Selection and preparation of actual satellite scenes.
- Change detection in the Miombo forests inside and outside of the concession area.
- Mapping of teak plantation blocks.
- Detection of “open areas” with little tree cover and potentials for agriculture.
