Reforesting degraded coastal areas and estuaries is a cost-effective approach for restoring the protective functions of disturbed ecosystems (Ecosystem-based Adaptation, EbA). The German International Climate Initiative (ICI) of the BMU supports innovative and implementation-oriented climate protection projects. The objective of the ICI project was to strengthen the climate resilience of the local population by restoring 500 hectares degraded coastal forests and estuaries (mangroves) with native tree species. Further objectives were the development of sustainable business models for the restored areas (fish & shrimp production, non-timber forest products) and the development of approaches for upscaling. UNIQUE was selected to implement this project due to its extensive experience in Vietnam, its technical expertise and local presence in Hué.
- Development of silvicultural concepts for restoring coastal areas in North-Central Coast of Vietnam.
- Reforestation of 450 hectares of degraded coastal forests and 50 hectares of mangroves in 3 provinces.
- Development of sustainable business models for the restored areas.
- Capacity building at different policy levels for EbA.
- Link to relevant bi- and multilateral development cooperation programs and upscaling approaches.
