Apart from coping with climate change, one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century is the loss of biodiversity. It has now become clear that the international protection and sustainable use of biodiversity cannot be guaranteed merely by international agreements and public funds. New ways of funding have to be identified. Private sector investments in projects for biodiversity protection and sustainable biodiversity use increasingly play a vital role. UNIQUE was contracted by the German Environment Ministry and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to analyze the status quo of the supply and demand of biodiversity-relevant investments and to develop funding mechanisms and tools for the mobilization of private investments.
- Evaluation of the current supply and demand of biodiversity-relevant investments.
- Elaboration of a model portfolio for private investments in biodiversity conservation.
- Development of funding mechanisms and tools to mobilize private investments.
- Application of different tools of technical and financial cooperation.
- Preparation of a proposal for the complementary support of investment projects.
