A private investment and forest management company planned to significantly expand its plantation areas and install wood processing capacities of 300,000 m³ annually. In total the plantations covered an area of approx. 15,000 hectares. At the time of the study, the wood processing industries (sawmill, combined heat and power plant, pole treatment plant and charcoal production) had approximately 300 employees. UNIQUE was selected to conduct an environmental and social (E&S) due diligence of its plantation and industrial assets according to the International Finance Cooperation (IFC), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) social and environmental safeguard standards.
- Summarize relevant environmental, social, labor and health safety aspects.
- Evaluate the adequacy of the E&S assessments, management, plans and procedures.
- Evaluate the company’s progress in implementing environmental and social programs.
- Evaluate the company’s performance on applicable IFC, ILO and FSC E&S issues.
- Elaborate an Environmental and Social Action Plan.
