In Africa, approximately 3.9 million hectares of forests were lost every year between 2010 and 2020, affecting livelihoods, wildlife habitats and economic development. To support landscape restoration, the International Climate Initiative (ICI) project “Large-scale Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in Africa” was created. The aim of this project is to promote the implementation of FLR in Sub-Saharan Africa and to contribute to the Africa Forest Restoration Initiative (AFR100). The World Bank is supporting the initiative both regionally and globally. Unique was commissioned to identify appropriate restoration modalities in Kenya and Malawi. Selected modalities should be attractive to the private sector, scalable, and should consider local livelihoods, businesses, climate change mitigation and biodiversity co-benefits.
- Identification of scalable FLR modalities
- Develop a cost benefit analysis and business plans for the selected modalities
- Analyze enabling conditions, regulations, risks, and gaps to be addressed to enable investment
- Explore potential financial and market mechanism (public and private) for financing FLR
- Assess enabling investment requirements to upscale FLR
