Countries party to the Paris Agreement are committed to implementing different strategies for adaptation and mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the agricultural sector. As part of the ASEAN and Africa Climate Smart Initiative, New Zealand via the New Zealand Agricultural GHG Research Centre is supporting five countries in Eastern and Southern Africa to improve their national GHG inventories for livestock. These inventories use the Tier 2 method of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and provide the basis for these countries to identify and develop mitigation strategies and technologies and inform policy design. This project aims to strengthen the capacity of five African partner countries to compile and manage Tier 2 GHG inventories for their livestock sectors.
- Strengthen the capacity of relevant institutions to compile and manage Tier 2 GHG inventories
- Strengthen institutional arrangements for collaboration of stakeholders for inventory compilation
- Support African partners to identify priorities and options for improving the GHG inventories
- Enhance the quality, collation, and management of data for use in national and regional programs
