Investment in Ugandan timber plantations has been impressive since 2014, with over 90,000 hectares established largely by the private sector. As these plantations rapidly mature, there is concern that the processing capacity will not be able to handle the volumes expected. This may lead to missed opportunities for value addition to the trees. This will have serious consequences for investors – especially the small medium growers who constitute some 50,000 hectares of the total. The Uganda Timber Growers’ Association (UTGA) represents most commercial tree growers in Uganda but has limited capacity and budget. The World Bank contracted Unique to provide technical support to UTGA, to assist them in developing plans for supporting the sector at this critical time.
