In Tajikistan only 2 % of the land area remains forested due to extreme deforestation following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the civil war from 1992-1997. To address the adverse impacts of this trend, the Government of Tajikistan is planning to implement a Forest Sector Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA). The NAMA will support transformation of its forest sector to improve institutional capacity, upscale financial resources and effectively implement the new Forest Code (2011). The NAMA is complementing the project on “Climate adaptation through sustainable forestry in Tajikistan,” implemented by the KfW development bank on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic and Development (BMZ). KfW assigned UNIQUE to prepare the NAMA Support Project Outline documentation for the NAMA Facility.
